Barbara Meek was born in Detroit, the daughter of Juanita, a pianist-turned-hairstylist and Harold, a bus driver. She attended Wayne State University's prestigious graduate school of theatre, and left in 1968 to join the Trinity Square Repertory Theatre in Providence, Rhode Island, of which she is still an active member, having appeared in more than 100 plays.
