Frankenstein: The Read with Alex Kingston
Title: Frankenstein: The Read with Alex Kingston
Character: Self
Released: March 3, 2024
Type: Movie
A young and gifted student, Victor Frankenstein, develops a secret technique to “infuse a spark of being” into lifeless matter - but his unorthodox scientific experiment backfires. His Creation is not the perfect specimen he imagines that it will be, but rather a hideous creature who is rejected by Victor and the world at large. Written more than 200 years ago, and published when Mary Shelley was just 20, the story of Frankenstein and his monster still resonates today: a classic horror story and a tragic romance which examines the battle between ambition and morality. This performance reading by Bafta-nominated Kingston is an abridgement which preserves the hard-hitting and politically charged aspects of Shelley's original writing, as well as her unflinching wit and strong female voice.

Two soldiers, each wearing an eyepatch, make their way down a corridor, stopping next to a pair of empty tanks nestled into alcoves along the wall. The soldiers check the tanks, report them as secured, then move on. After the soldiers leave, a Silent appears in each tank, alive and awake. Footage from security cameras throughout the base reveal there are at least one hundred and twelve identical tanks, with the implication that all of them contain Silents. Behind a barricaded wooden door in another room containing an ancient Egyptian sarcophagus, a woman in a black suit stands with her back turned to the camera. As the camera zooms in, she turns. It is River Song, with an eyepatch over her right eye. She smiles.

These stories had little in common with John Buchan's novels about the character, although some character names are taken from his other novels. There were two series, the first with six episodes, the second with seven. The combined 13 episodes ran for a total of 652 minutes. One episode, A Point of Honour, was based on a story of the same name by Dornford Yates that appeared in his 1914 book The Brother of Daphne, although Yates was not credited. Another episode used a plot device from the Leslie Charteris Saint story The Unblemished Bootlegger, from the 1933 book The Brighter Buccaneer, again uncredited.
