"Le Crabe Tambour" ("Drummer Crab") is the nickname for the mysterious central character, Willsdorff (Jacques Perrin), an Alsatian, whose doomed, out-of-date career is recalled through the tales of three naval officers currently serving aboard a French supply ship in the North Atlantic.

One thing leading to another, one adventure leading to another, Jean finds himself involved in the trafficking operation, first unwittingly, then of his own free will, when he realizes that Van, the young Vietnamese woman involved, is risking her own life. With the help of the girl's family and a sympathetic policeman, Jean manages to have the gang arrested, and, taking the plane back to France - very temporarily - he entrusts Van, who has become his most precious possession, to Nicole, who has finally been found and is somewhat melancholy.

Picked up by a beautiful motorist, jobless hitchhiker Pierre (Hossein) is subsequently romanced by the girl. Immediately thereafter, however, she dumps him, attempting to run him over as a final insult. Memorizing her license number, Pierre pursues the enigmatic motorist. Arriving at her home, Pierre is met by two young ladies (Marina Vlady and Odelle Versois), either one of whom might be the woman he's looking for.

The film uses original footage from the Mille Miglia , an Italian open-road endurance race, featuring classic period racing cars.

In despair, Mme de Bussange sets fire to the castle and dies in the inferno.

And Fred Collins makes a poignant journey to the hotel where he'd honeymooned with his late wife. The film works best as a low-key comedy-drama; it is least successful when it ventures into O.
