Among the regular segments are round table discussions between the three regular hosts, top-5 debates, interviews with heavy metal musicians, "Stump the Trunk," where audience members ask provided trivia questions of host Eddie Trunk in hopes of acquiring prizes, and "The Throwdown," where the hosts and guests vote on and debate great moments and figures in metal history. The guitar & bass-heavy theme song, "Day to Remember" was co-written by co-host Jim Florentine and Guns N' Roses lead guitarist Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal and performed by Thal. The intro to "Stump the Trunk" was composed by Mark Fain.

Heavy: The Story of Metal is a four-part documentary special that aired on VH1 in 2006. The series focuses on the origins, subgenres, and the bands of heavy metal music, paying close attention to influential bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden, who helped to define heavy metal in its early years. Other bands on the program include, Alice Cooper, Kiss, AC/DC, Van Halen, Def Leppard, Quiet Riot, Mötley Crüe, Megadeth, Metallica, Anthrax, Guns N' Roses, and Marilyn Manson. However, the documentary notably passes over lower profile metal sub-genres such as death metal, black metal, doom metal, progressive metal, power metal and many others considered core elements of today's metal pantheon, focusing mostly on hard rock & traditional heavy metal. My Coolest Years is a television program that aired on VH1 in which actors, musicians, and other celebrities reminisce about their high school years.

Made in Japan was recorded live over three nights during 15–17 August 1972 at Festival Hall, Osaka and at Budokan, Tokyo, Japan. Four of the tracks come from the album Machine Head which had been released earlier that year. The album was at first seen as somewhat unimportant by the band members, and only Roger Glover and Ian Paice showed up to mix it. The release in the US was delayed, until April 1973, because Warner Bros. wanted to release Who Do We Think We Are first. The three concerts recorded were later released as Live in Japan 3-CD box set (1993). According to the liner notes for that set, unlike many live albums, there are no overdubs or studio additions to the original album.
