A former NCAA wrestling standout, Bader presents a different challenge than previous defenses. Also on the card, Craig Jones will face Vinny Magalhaes, who are both decorated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners, along with former judo Olympic gold medalist Satoshi Ishii. Fowler won all of his previous defenses in the overtime ruleset.

UFC Fight Night 136: Hunt vs. Oleinik was a mixed martial arts event produced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship held on September 15, 2018 at Olimpiyskiy Stadium in Moscow, Russia. The event marked the promotion's first visit to Russia. The UFC arranged to use half of the venue and used a modified seating configuration for the arena. On July 19, the promotion announced that a bout between the 2001 K-1 World Grand Prix winner and former interim title challenger Mark Hunt and Oleinik would serve as the event headliner.

The event was headlined by a lightweight bout between Michael Johnson and former WSOF Lightweight Champion Justin Gaethje. The welterweight finals of The Ultimate Fighter: Redemption took place at the event.

UFC on Fox 17: dos Anjos vs. Cowboy 2 was a mixed martial arts event that took place on December 19, 2015 at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida. This was the last UFC event in 2015. Dos Anjos won their first fight at UFC Fight Night: Condit vs. Kampmann 2 by unanimous decision.

The card was headlined by a middleweight bout between Gegard Mousasi and Mark Muñoz. This event was the first of two that took place on May 31, 2014, with The Ultimate Fighter Brazil 3 Finale: Miocic vs. Maldonado being the other making it only the second time in UFC history that they have hosted two events in one day.

UFC Fight Night 38: Shogun vs. Henderson 2 was a mixed martial arts event held on March 23, 2014, at the Ginásio Nélio Dias in Natal, Brazil. The event was headlined by the anticipated rematch between mixed martial arts legends Maurício Rua and Dan Henderson. Henderson won their first encounter back in November 2011 at UFC 139 via unanimous decision in a bout lauded by many MMA pundits as the Fight of the Year for 2011 and one of the best bouts in the history of the UFC.
