The handsome top agent Matt dies a tragic death in his bath tub - the women mourn about the loss. Three convicts escape from prison on Devil's Island just before Christmas and arrive at a nearby French colonial town. They go to the store of the Ducotels, the only store that gives supplies on credit. They initially intend to take advantage of them but have a change of heart after they find the family is in financial troubles.

Jerry Mulligan is an exuberant American expatriate in Paris trying to make a reputation as a painter. To make money for his wife and child, he marries wealthy widows and then murders them. His crime spree eventually works against him when two particular widows break his normal routine.
