The Loggerheads was an animated cartoon television series by Magma Films. It combined an old viking storylines with dark humour. It lasted only one season and was shown in Germany in 1997, on Britain's Channel Five in 1998 and later on the Pop TV channel, and in Italy TMC2 in 1999. The Story revolved around the Loggerhead chief Bjorn the Red and the rich Gissur the Pale and his family's attempts to contest the post. The opening/ending theme of the Italian version was written by Vito Abbonato and Andrea Ridolfi.

But there are three people knowing a way to prevent this. Most notably the two animators Edwin and Biggy, who don't allow any amusement outside their own plans, and of course the always drunken club chief Mrs. Wenger, whose only thought is, that there shouldn't be any reclamation from the travel agency. Apart from the scruffy condition of the Club (no water in the pool, etc). and the obscure Club activities involving Biggy and Edwin, the vacation becomes a complete horror trip, with only one end in sight, which is to part from the club as soon as possible. In 1986 another series was aired: Der kleine Vampir which was based upon other books. In the new series, other actors were used as the originals were now eight years older. The new series is neither a successor concerning the story. Furthermore, the new series introduce Anna and Rüdigers parents. Also, uncle Theodor is not present as he is dead whereas Theodor was a main character in the first series.

The show premiered on January 15, 1973 and lasted for about twenty episodes, airing its last on November 4, 1974. In 1976, the show had a short-lived revival with another four episodes. Ein Herz und eine Seele was written by Wolfgang Menge. The show was extremely successful during its initial run and it still proves very popular in reruns. Two episodes in particular, Silvesterpunsch and Rosenmontagszug have gained such popularity that they are now shown traditionally on German TV on New Year's Eve and Rosenmontag, respectively.
