In eighteenth-century France, a girl is forced against her will to take vows as a nun. Three mothers superior treat her in radically different ways, ranging from maternal concern, to sadistic persecution, to lesbian desire.

Two ambitious young provincials, Patrick and Michel, go to Paris to seek their fortune. Patrick seems to be the epitome of the up-and-comer at any price: with no scruples whatsoever, he manages to break into the world of finance, i.e. into the home of banker Philippe Haguenauer. During a walk along the cliffs not far from Marseille, Elisa Langerot sees her husband slip and fall to his death.
