Due to a violent snowstorm, Agnieszka is cut off from the rest of the world in a charming mountain cottage, and a mysterious and handsome man in a Santa Claus suit appears on her way. Five-year-old Zosia and her mother, despite their poor financial situation, are trying to prepare a traditional family Christmas Eve, and they can be helped by Robert – a lonely policeman on Christmas duty who, out of pure need of his heart, wants to do something good for someone. This magical time is also a chance for a man to spend Christmas again with his old love - provided, of course, the woman in his life finds a moment of peace, taking care of the crazy and unpredictable residents of the "Happy End" nursing home.

The plot revolves around the controversial relationship between maid Stefania Chornenko and blueblood Adelia Anger against the backdrop of the provincial Austro-Hungary in 1900. Both Stefania’s parents and Adelia’s mother died during the fire. Adelia’s father adopted neighbors’ orphan. Girls grew up together to become as close as sisters, though Stefania served as the maid. This attachment develops into love-trap: on one hand full of mutual manipulation and jealousy, but equally based on сare and devotion. The illusion of balance is broken when Adelia marries sculptor Petro. Everything gets even more complicated when Joseph, the old love interest of Stefa, returns to town as the priest and married man. Illusions are destined to evaporate and reality comes into focus.

Adam Kruk, a 40 year old police officer addicted to painkillers and psychotropic drugs, returns to the town he grew up in to find the paedophile who abused his friend Slawek years ago. In the spring of 1945, the commanding officer of the National Armed Forces in Mazowsze and older brother of 20-year-old Mieczyslaw Dziemieszkiewicz, is assassinated by Soviet soldiers. Mieczyslaw then joins the National Military Union. He becomes the commander of a partisan unit fighting for the next six years to free Poland from Soviet tyranny by terrorizing the UB and its collaborators. Communist authorities will do whatever it takes to track down the "enemy of the people's power."
