A young man and his girlfriend unwittingly come into possession of a bag containing one million dollars belonging to a drug-smuggling ring. The mobsters try to catch the couple and retrieve their money.

Nathan Hayes is a religious man trying to hold onto his farm and keep his family in line. The setting was the night shift of a Manhattan court, presided over by the young, unorthodox Judge Harold T. "Harry" Stone. It was created by comedy writer Reinhold Weege, who had previously worked on Barney Miller in the 1970s and early 1980s.
