This film tells the story of an old herdsman who saved a newborn black horse and raised it to be a vigorous one. The black horse was sold due to an incident, and it started an extraordinary life journey. After many hardships, he finally returned to the old herdsman's side…

On the isolated grasslands of Inner Mongolia, a shepherdess adopts an orphan from the city. Years later after the boy has left to serve in the air force, a well-intentioned white lie gives the elderly shepherdess hope of seeing her adopted son one last time.

During WWII, two injured soldiers, one Japanese and one Russian, are rescued and nursed back to health by a Mongolian goat herder.

Bilike has never seen a ping-pong ball before. He and his family live without electricity and running water in a solitary tent home among the vast steppe grasslands. The magnificent landscape here has changed little since the days of Genghis Kahn. But life in the middle of nowhere can be exciting for a young boy. The smallest of details become big events for curious Bilike and his best friends Erguotou and Dawa. The mystery of the small white ball floating in the creek leads to questions about the world around them, as well as innocent mischief.

A farmer and his wife live in a rural part of Inner Mongolia with their three children. Chinese population control policies prevent them from having any more. The farmer sets out for the nearest town to obtain birth control. He comes upon a Russian truck driver who has ended up in a lake. The farmer takes the man back to his farm, and after initially being appalled, the Russian becomes enchanted with the peaceful life of the countryside and decides to stay. But his presence presages big changes for the peasants.
