A recently retired English professor discovers a real knack for investigation and cannot help but interfere with the cases assigned to her police detective son.

With her son grown up, single mom Pearl Nolan decides to pursue her lifelong dream and launches a private detective agency, which she runs from her family's restaurant in the coastal town of Whitstable. Blue Story depicts elements of Rapman's own personal experiences and aspects of his childhood.
