The story of her grandmother’s old suitcase moves Hazal to understand her kurdish families past and carry on the legacy

When Khalil, a primary school teacher in Berlin, gets hold of images of war from his Kurdish hometown of Cizre, he is forced to question his entire existence in Berlin. His life spirals out of balance as he seems to recognise his long lost sister in the videos – whom he thought long dead. He tries everything to get in contact, to save his sister, to inform the public about this brutal war. And loses himself.

Rojda, a native of Iraqi Kurdistan and a soldier in the German army, travels to a refugee camp in Greece where she manages to meet her mother, who has bad news about her sister Dilan.

Bahar, the commanding officer of the Daughters of the Sun, a battalion made up entirely of Kurdish female soldiers, is on the cusp of liberating their town, which has been overrun by ISIS extremists.

Berlin widower Paul Krüger, a retired ex-GDR stone mason (66), hates foreigner immigrants, especially Muslims.
