Funeral director Phil suddenly has to deal with his own sorrow, as his wife passes away. Along with sorrow comes a meeting with the heartbroken daughter Sarah, who Phil has not dealt with in years.

He enrolls in the Canadian army, and, after training in Alberta and Montreal, he finds himself in England and France. The war becomes another way for him to resolve his conflicts, his dramas, his passions--his wars.
