The play is adapted from the work of the same name by writer Li Juan. Li Wenxiu (played by Zhou Yiran), a Han Chinese girl who grew up in Altay, is determined to pursue her literary dream in a big city. However, she repeatedly encounters obstacles and is forced to return to her hometown to rely on her mother (played by Ma Yili) who runs a small shop. After meeting Kazakh boy Batai (played by Yu Shi), Wen Xiu gradually discovered the beauty of the local area.

Set against the backdrop of massive economic growth in the 1990s, the story follows A Bao, a self-made millionaire and his journey from being a young opportunist with a troubled past to accumulating dazzling wealth in the city of Shanghai. It also follows his entanglement with four women who represent the pursuits of his life: adventure, honour, love and innocence.

Part of the series was shot at Qiao's Compound, which was Qiao Zhiyong's ancestral home at Qi County, Shanxi. The series debuted on CCTV-1 on February 13, 2006 and comprises 45 episodes. It was directed by Hu Mei, known for her historical dramas Yongzheng Dynasty and The Emperor Han Wu. Lead actor and actress Chen Jianbin and Jiang Qinqin won the Audience's Favorite Actor/Actress Awards at the 2006 Golden Eagle TV Art Festival for their roles in this series. The pair was married in 2006. Qiao's Grand Courtyard clinched Best Drama Series at the 1st Seoul Drama Awards.
