Talented mathematician Anna Nikolaevna Shvabrina works as a school teacher. By the will of fate, she begins to help Captain Vershinin investigate complex crimes using mathematical methods. The main tools of the investigator are many years of experience and the basics of forensic science, Anna Nikolaevna is an impeccable knowledge of mathematical methods, formulas and models. It would seem that they are completely different, but it is thanks to this union that it will be possible to investigate the most difficult cases.

Autumn 1941. Miraculously escaping from the Kiev boiler, investigators from the military prosecutor's office Rokotov, Mirsky and Elagina arrive in Kharkov, where evacuation is already in full swing. They have in their hands important information about the activities of the German espionage organization. New circumstances force them to linger in Kharkov. Indeed, together with the enterprises being evacuated, under the guise of refugees, further groups of German saboteurs are moving further east, whose purpose is sabotage and sabotage at military factories. Trying to open the channels for transporting scouts to the Soviet rear, Rokotov and Elagina find out that the organization operating in Kharkov is directly related to the Kiev group that they discovered a few hours before the city was surrendered. And the curator of both of these groups occupies a high post in the Main Military Prosecutor's Office.

A special squad is tasked with investigating major cases by acting both at the frontline and in the city itself, where rising criminals are joining German subversives in infiltrating the city, while a number of Soviet government representatives are happily profiting from other people’s misery.

The events of the film take place in the Soviet Union in the early 1980s. It is forbidden to listen to foreign radio stations, it is not safe to voice one’s opinions in front of strangers. Words of truth are spoken only in private kitchens behind the curtained windows. The KGB tap phones, survey the ‘unreliable’ and consistently step by step destroy all forms of decent. The protagonists challenge the inhumane state machine, putting on stake their very lives and proving that nothing and nobody can stop a person who is on his way to achieve a true freedom.

For years, Andrei Evilenko eluded the obsessive Detective Lesiev and the psychiatric profiler Aron Richter. Spurred on by his rabid fury at the gradual crumbling of his precious Soviet Union, Evilenko is a man who will live, die and kill as a communist.
