Long before he played the corpulent Goldfinger, German actor Gert Froebe was a scarecrow-skinny comedian. In Berliner Ballade, Froebe makes his screen debut as Otto, a feckless Everyman who tries to adjust to the postwar travails of his defeated nation. Stemmle doesn't have to strive for pathos: he merely places his gangly star amidst the ruins of a bombed-out Berlin, and the point is made for him. Filmed in 1948, Berliner Ballade was later released in the U.S. as The Berliner.

The young marriage of the insurance agent Hannes and his wife Nora is being worn down by financial difficulties and overcrowded living conditions. Hannes is unable to sell enough policies and life becomes ever worse for the two. Nora attempts to earn some extra money, but even that proves to be a burden on their relationship, not the least because her boss is hitting up on her. She's expecting Hannes' child, too, but he is starting to turn further and further away from her.

The newspaper delivery driver Paul falls in love with Lotte, who works in her mother’s kiosk. One day, Paul helps a man in a black Mercedes, who’s been in an accident. While helping him, a notebook has fallen out of the man’s pocket, which Paul thinks is his own and pockets. In fact, the notebook belongs to a band of auto thieves, who’ll now do anything and everything possible to get the book back.

After her husband suddenly dies, a small town woman becomes the target of gossip, as to whether he had been having an affair and whether she is connected to his demise.

The story is one of the classic operetta stories with a young princess destined to marry a king whom her mother tries to enforce while the young woman tries to escape her fate.

Baroness Marika von Korossy dresses up as a man, in order to compete in a horse race. Her victorious horse, Satan, will only allow her to ride him and throws everyone else off of him. That includes the dandy lieutenant Tibor von Denes, who immediately recognizes that Marika isn't a man. It isn't long before he makes friends with her and even gets her to dance with him. It's then that Marika takes off her hat and shows she's a woman, which causes jealous Ilonka von Peredy to go into a rage. When Marika is forced to sell her estate to raise money, Ilonka is able to get Marika's beloved Satan.
