After finding a mysterious suitcase while staying in a remote house in the woods, a woman finds herself being haunted by the past.

Respected police detective Gradov reluctantly turns to crime to find the money to pay for his terminally ill wife’s urgent medical treatment. During an investigation into a string of crimes Gradov begins to fall under suspicion, his colleague Osokin becomes convinced of his guilt and determined to expose him. But Gradov has already sacrificed his integrity and knows that he will stop at nothing to save his wife.

A youngster Andis, 21 offers a friend of his grandmother Mara, 80, who is dying, to fulfil her every wish in exchange for her apartment after her death. This agreement lets both of them rethink their attitude for what they actually want.

The film is set in the 1920s. Shura Sevastyanov is an aspiring journalist in a small newspaper, with two-classes of a parochial school behind him.
