He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Coming Home (1978) and the Academy Award for Best Actor for Nebraska (2013). His other major film appearances include Silent Running (1972), The King of Marvin Gardens (1972), The Cowboys (1972), Posse (1975), Family Plot (1976), Black Sunday (1977), Tattoo (1981), Monster (2003), The Hateful Eight (2015), and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019).

Maharis was ill for much of the third season, during which time Tod was shown traveling on his own.
