We love rock ’n’ roll: well, it’s hard not to, with its sexy, totally exhilarating back story, and the way it continues to evolve and remain relevant. Almost 70 years after it burst onto the scene in the United States, the jury’s still out on who actually invented it. The truth is, rock ’n’ roll is a mash-up of genres that aligned at the perfect time, just as people emerged from the trauma of the Second World War craving a complete break from the recent past, and with money to spend. What is rock music? Let's take a look at it in the next Documentary.

Character: Self
Released: April 15, 2008
Type: Movie
While Heavy Metal is often accused of being static and conservative, in truth it is a radical form that regularly re-invents itself, and one which attracts generation after generation of musicians willing to learn from the past, but hungry to evolve the future. And so it was that, in the early 1980s, a young man named Lars Ulrich was so taken by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, then creating music paper headlines in the UK, that he came to England to track down obscure records, take them home to LA and, with his buddies, listen to them - until they came up with a genre of their own, soon be termed Thrash Metal.

Few bands can claim to have defined a musical genre; fewer can claim to have invented one. Metallica has done both. The world's greatest exponents of the art of Thrash Metal have spent more than twenty five years taking their blistering hard rock around the world; in doing so they have sold an incredible 90 million albums. Featuring rare archive interviews with guitarist James Hetfield and former bassist Jason Newstead, we hear how the band drew on British heavy metal and US punk to fashion their extraordinary sound. We hear about the band's successes, its trials and tribulations, which included the death of bass player Cliff Burton in Sweden in 1986.

The DVD features concert footage, band interviews, a documentary, behind the scenes footage and a photo gallery consisting of approximately 1,000 photos. Three of the performances feature multiple angles. During the performance of the song "Enter Sandman", the entire stage is set to appear to collapse and explode, with pyrotechnics and a technician (referred to in the extras as the "Burning Dude") who runs across the stage while on fire, as another technician swings overhead. This is also one of the only Metallica concerts that didn't feature "Ecstasy of Gold" as a intro.

Metallica: Fan Can 1
Title: Metallica: Fan Can 1
Character: Self
Released: January 1, 1996
Type: Movie
Fan Cans are customized paint cans stuffed with a CD, video, T-shirt and various Metallica “swag”. Fan Cans are released by the official fan club and sold to members only, this makes the early versions practically hard to find. Fan Can 1 is a collection of studio outtakes and miscellaneous jams from when the band was in the studio recording Load. During one of the Load sessions, Metallica recorded (what became the Fan Can one CD) in one take without stopping the tape between songs, capturing discussions between the band and Bob Rock about what to play and such. The tracks are untitled but include versions and snippets of songs by AC/DC, Mercyful Fate, The Beatles and one of Lars favorites at that time, Oasis. These covers are often short or cut in half as they haven't played them before. The video is excellent, containing footage not available anywhere else. The Video and CD cover art design is by James Hetfield.

VOÏVOD: We Are Connected

From unlikely origins in northern Québec at the height of the Cold War, Voïvod’s post-apocalyptic sci-fi aesthetic, fuelled by a youthful obsession with their instruments, took them from underground success to sharing dates and tours with Iron Maiden, Rush, and Metallica. Despite adversity, and perhaps by cosmic intervention or just serendipity, Voïvod found guitarist Daniel “Chewy” Mongrain; subsequently, the band re-ignited their engines and laid a course back to Morgöth via numerous live shows around the world, a comeback album in Target Earth, singles, EPs, and finally, the late-career triumph, The Wake. In 2019, Voïvod were recognized by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences with a Juno Award for best hard rock/metal album of the year for The Wake.
