Cold-hearted and manipulative Kamla has fallen in love with a poor man and marries him and has a child named Santosh. She soon realizes that life is not fun living in poverty, and abandons her child and husband, and returns back to her father and his wealth. She re-marries millionaire Kailashpathi, and has a child named Kundan from him. Years pass by, Kundan and Santosh have both grown up. Kundan is the owner of the mill with his mom, while Santosh is a struggling mill worker, and a union worker. A confrontation ensues between the mill and the workers, and Kamla is able to negotiate a settlement and get the workers back to work, but fails to keep the promise. Santosh opposes this, and she sets her goons and Kundan against him. Santosh is abducted and held prisoner by Kamla and Kundan, and the only way he can be released is when he compromises with them.

Soni is forced to work for Chinoy, a smuggler, and soon becomes the head of the gang without his wife's knowledge. However, his misdeeds are exposed when Ram testifies again him and gets him arrested.

As in all Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the setting is a simple middle class family with ordinary existence. It is totally wonderful to see how Hrishikesh Mukherjee finds stories amongst all of us. Truly a mastermind.

Shanker is a young man who lives in a small village community with his mute sister, Durgi, and his mom, Shanti. Shanker's efforts to get Durgi married are all in vain. The local money-lender, Lala, in his early 60s, comes to know about this and proposes to marry Durgi, but is refused, and asked to leave. Lala plots vengeance, and gets his chance to rape Durgi, resulting in the death of Durgi. Shanker hunts him down, and kills him. Lala's death involves the police, and Shanker must run from them. He does so, and joins a gang of dacoits and pledges to be part of their gang, not knowing that in so doing, he will be spending the rest of his life, hiding in caverns and the countryside, unable to see his mother anymore, nor any normal human being, for the rest of his life.

Widowed Radha lives in rural India in the 1960s, along with two sons: Bharat and Puran. While she would like to educate her sons and ensure that they lead good lives, she cannot do so on her own, and must sacrifice the career of one son so that the second can achieve this goal.
